Adjunct Faculty, English

Summary:
Adjunct Faculty teach a variety of courses, depending upon their education and experience, such as Writing from Sources, Writing about Literature, and Creative Writing. Adjunct Faculty are responsible for ensuring that students meet all learning outcomes and successfully complete their course as outlined. Students must receive appropriate and timely feedback and assessments throughout the course.

Department: School of Humanities & Social Sciences: English Language and Literature

Education/Experience:
Masters in English or a related field plus one year experience teaching at the college level or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
Excellent communications are essential and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, service and technology application in the classroom.

Demonstrated mastery of subject matter or discipline.

Demonstrated ability to teach and evaluate undergraduate students.

Knowledge of competency-based education.

Familiarity with instructional techniques designed to reach students of varying preparation levels and abilities.

Physical Requirements:
Position requires sitting and standing for long periods of time.
Position requires the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.
Position requires additional hours for meetings and events.

Essential Functions:
Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or telecommunications courses and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies and practica; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations; and supervising independent study projects. Professional peer review is an essential feature of effective teaching.

Student advising includes time spent meeting with students regarding academic, curricular and career matters.

University service includes service on the Faculty Council, school and departmental committees.

Professional service implies the use of academic and professional expertise to serve your profession, the University, and the community.

Cooperative extension includes identifying current needs, adapting research results into contemporary language,, presenting research-supported information and education to the people of the state, providing leadership in identifying and presenting cutting-edge technology in their discipline, developing interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, and collaborating with research and teaching faculty to stay current in their fields.

Administrative responsibilities include writing syllabi, grading course work, and submitting final grades.

Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.
